Joy Chen is a Bristol and Shanghai based performance designer. She holds a degree in Set Design from the Shanghai Theatre Academy and further honed her craft at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, where she also won the John Elvery Award.
Her graduation play, Holes, was performed to great acclaim at the Wardrobe Theatre and was invited to the 10th Wuzhen International Theatre Festival.
Joy has a diverse background in theatre, short films and exhibitions, bringing a wealth of experience to her design work. From 2018 to 2021, Joy Chen served as the technical liaison for the Great Theatre of China International Theatre Festival, where she was recognised by various theatre companies.
Joy's design style is bold and metaphorical, with a passion for the intricate interplay between audience, narrative and social phenomena. Specialising in design, modelling and digital mapping, she continues to push the boundaries of creativity by blending traditional Chinese culture with the rich artistic landscape of the UK.
